Are you interested in becoming a patroller? The National Ski Patrol (NSP), founded in 1938 by Charles (Minnie) Dole, had followed its creed of “Service and Safety” since the establishment of skiing as a popular sport in the United States. The NSP has become the largest winter rescue organization in the world. It is composed of more than 28,500 members serving over 600 ski patrols including volunteer, paid, alpine, snowboard and nordic patrollers throughout the United States and certain military areas in Europe.
Here are the steps it will take you to start down the journey of a ski/snowboard safety professional.
- Attend the “ski along” with the patrol in February.
- Attend the orientation meeting, where you learn about the time and financial commitments.
- Begin Outdoor Emergency Care Course.
- Complete and pass the Outdoor Emergency Care Course (OEC).
- Attend orientation at the hill and Patroller 101 in November.
- Begin toboggan training and ski proficiency training when the hill opens, usually November.
- Complete lift evacuation training in the fall.
- Complete and pass toboggan training and ski proficiency, usually in February.
